UroLift Q & A
What is the UroLift System?
The inability to sufficiently empty your bladder due to an enlarged prostate, or BPH, is extremely common and causes discomfort, embarrassment, and annoyance (at the very least).
The specialists at the Urology Associates Medical Group use an innovative treatment to resolve such disorders: the UroLift System. This minimally invasive procedure treats BPH by lifting the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way, so it no longer blocks the urethra.
This procedure involves no removing, cutting, or heating of your prostate tissue. The risk profile of the UroLift System is better than what has been reported for major surgical procedures, such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), or the use of long-term drugs.
How does the UroLift System work?
Safe and straightforward, a highly-trained urologist performs the UroLift System procedure. It's an outpatient prostate treatment, usually performed in the office under local or general anesthesia.
During your appointment, the urologist places tiny, permanent implants to hold your prostate lobes apart to relieve compression on the urethra, allowing your urine to flow normally again.
What happens after a UroLift System treatment?
Because a UroLift System treatment is an outpatient procedure, you can go home to rest after surgery.
As part of the best practices for aftercare, only about 20% of men require the use of a catheter for proper healing, and for one night only. This percentage is much lower compared with traditional invasive surgeries like TURP.
Posttreatment, you enjoy minimal downtime and are likely to experience relief of your symptoms within two weeks. Some men may experience urinary discomfort during the recovery period, but this tends to resolve within two to four weeks.
What are the benefits of the UroLift System?
The advantages of the UroLift System include:
